Ozempic® is the Novo Nordisk pen — same molecule as Wegovy and compounded semaglutide, FDA-approved for T2D and cardiovascular risk reduction.
Ozempic is brand-name semaglutide manufactured by Novo Nordisk, FDA-approved in December 2017 for glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. In January 2020 the label was expanded to include reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events in T2D patients with established cardiovascular disease, based on the SUSTAIN-6 trial. The active molecule is chemically identical to Wegovy and to compounded semaglutide — what differs is the FDA-approved indication, the pen format, and the 2 mg maximum dose.
Ozempic is approved for diabetes, not for weight loss — off-label use for weight management is doctor-determined based on your individual clinical picture. Patients with type 2 diabetes often see meaningful weight reduction as a documented secondary benefit, but if weight loss is the primary goal your doctor may recommend Wegovy or compounded semaglutide instead. The choice is about indication, access, and clinical fit — part of our broader approach to weight loss.

“My A1C dropped from 8.4 to 6.1 in nine months on Ozempic. The Peptide12 doctor coordinated with my endocrinologist and the prior auth went through on the first try.”
Carlos V.
San Antonio, TX
“After my heart attack, my cardiologist wanted me on Ozempic specifically for the CV indication. Twelve pounds down, A1C in range, and my last echo looked the best it has in years.”
Theresa M.
Pittsburgh, PA
“I wanted the FDA-approved branded version even though I’m paying NovoCare cash. Five months in, A1C is normal for the first time in a decade and my fasting numbers are steady.”
Andre P.
Tulsa, OK
“Started Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and ended up losing 31 pounds as a side benefit. The titration schedule the doctor sent me made the nausea totally manageable.”
Linda H.
Wichita, KS
“My insurance covered Ozempic with prior auth and Peptide12 handled every form. Down two pant sizes, A1C from 7.8 to 5.9, and I sleep through the night again.”
Jamal R.
Newark, NJ
“When NovoCare became too expensive, the doctor switched me to compounded semaglutide at the same dose. Same effect, half the price, no re-titration needed.”
Megan O.

Frequently asked questions
No. Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes (2017) and for cardiovascular risk reduction in T2D patients with established CV disease (2020). Weight loss is a documented secondary benefit, but using Ozempic primarily for weight management is off-label — a clinical decision your prescribing doctor makes individually. Wegovy is the FDA-approved semaglutide pen for chronic weight management.
Possibly. Ozempic is one of several FDA-approved options for adults with T2D who need better glycemic control, especially when there is also overweight, obesity, or established cardiovascular disease. Your doctor will weigh your A1C, kidney function, CV history, and medication list before recommending it.
Same molecule (semaglutide), same once-weekly schedule, different indications and maximum doses. Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes and tops out at 2 mg weekly. Wegovy is FDA-approved for chronic weight management and titrates up to 2.4 mg weekly. Insurance coverage often dictates which one you receive.
Most commercial plans and Medicare Part D cover Ozempic for type 2 diabetes with prior authorization. Coverage for off-label weight-loss use is rare. Our team runs a full benefits check and submits the prior auth on your behalf before you pay anything out of pocket.
Off-label prescribing is legal and doctor-determined, but most insurers will not cover Ozempic without a T2D diagnosis, and Novo Nordisk’s NovoCare cash-pay program is approximately $499 per month. If weight loss is your primary goal, your doctor will usually recommend Wegovy (FDA-approved for that indication) or compounded semaglutide as more direct options.
Weight loss on Ozempic varies. T2D patients in the SUSTAIN trials lost an average of 4–6 kg at 1 mg weekly. Off-label users at higher doses may see more, but Ozempic’s 2 mg ceiling is lower than Wegovy’s 2.4 mg target, so weight outcomes are generally less than what STEP 1 reported for Wegovy (~15% body weight).
Yes, when clinically appropriate. The active molecule is identical, so your doctor can transition you to compounded semaglutide from a state-licensed 503A pharmacy without re-titrating from zero in most cases. Many patients switch when insurance denies coverage or NovoCare cash-pay is out of reach.
No. The FDA formally resolved the Ozempic shortage and the drug is reliably available across all approved pen strengths. This also means the FDA chronic-shortage exemption no longer applies to compounded semaglutide, though state-licensed 503A compounding remains available under patient-specific clinical criteria.
